Dear Penpal,

It's flattering to know someone appreciates your writing so much, and holds it in high regards. I don't know if I can answer all your questions but to start off, there isn't a method or procedure to writing. It's a simple action of transferring your thoughts into words and delivering them in a fashion that seems logical to you.

In my experience the best way to improve your writing, and make it more worldly is through experiencing more and more, and a convenient and economical way to do that is through books. Reading a variety of books and authors provides you with different perspectives, different writing styles and a vast pool of vocabulary. Every writer over time develops their own style, some are more firm in theirs and some change it from time to time, but a writer's style is only an amalgamation of of others' writing styles. As you read, your writing is always influenced. I have noticed that if there is a particular author that I like then I tend to adopt their style to some extent.

But while you use good authors as a stepping stone, input your own originality, and there is no way of telling you how to do this, except that don't write to please others, write the same way you think. The way you structure your thoughts is how you should structure your essays as well.
But as Kurt Vonnegut claims, reading is hard for the readers so make it simple for them. Don't use big words when you can use a small one. Don't complicate your sentences unless you don't want your readers to understand what you are trying to say.

I think the most interesting writing comes from very boring mundane things. Observe everything around you, with scrutiny and peculiarity, and you will find things other people haven't noticed, or you will find a new perspective, so write about that.

As a photographer you subconsciously go through the same process pen pal, so rely on your instincts, and write about your pictures, and use your pictures as well to convey yourself.

you don't need a proper art background, and when you get those crazy ideas just write them down, and them use them to formulate blogs, or just write them down for future reference.

good luck.

sincerely,
certainepic
