"dude,
the goodbye is probably the most important part of the conversation
like there's the e's
and variant spellings
all tell how a conversation went, where you are at a relationship"
Goodbyes are usually an awkward thing,
for me even so, on MSN.
I like just a good ol' bye.
but I realized a long time ago that it seems 'cold' to people.
so I conformed, adding enough e's or hearts to match the other persons elaborate goodbye.
but sometimes its just too annoying.
sometimes there's too many e's, and <3's. but I think I might be too far gone as well. I feel bad when I end a good conversation with a simple, yet classy, bye. so then I end up adding a <3 or something equally tacky. But, then when someone who usually ends a conversation with: "I have to go sorrrrry + ttyl + byeeeeeeee<3333" Just says "bye" and signs off, well that you know is cold. Very cold. meh. I think I will stop trying to compete with everyone's goodbyes.

Emotions are hard to show in simple MSN converstation. Usually a long pause or silence marks the end of a conversation, for me at least.
A 'bai' and 'hai' are good too. The 'i' added to the end adds a friendly tone, but at the same time shows that you respect your chat collegue enough to take the time to replace all the 'y's with 'i's. =P
