Benazir Bhutto at the Rally in Rawalpindi.
This morning the first thing i was told by my dad was that Benazir Bhutto is dead, she was assassinated. I sought through my brain, looking for other stuff i knew about her. And here it is:
She was the first, and I believe the only Female leader to ever come in power in Pakistan, or any other Muslim country. Her two brothers and father were also political leaders, and i think all of them were assassinated, at one time or another.
Benazir served two terms as Prime Minister, each time was expelled from the office, due to charges of alleged "corruption". She then chose to flee Pakistan and lived in London. And recently made her come back.
There was an attempted assassination upon her arrival on Pakistani land. But she didn't back down, and died Thursday due to being shot and bombed during a rally in Rawalpindi.
From what I know, it was likely that she would have won the election, and rightfully so, because she was the only candidate that seemed to offer realistic hope to the people, and not have a personal agenda [or affiliation with the US].
The impacts of her assassination are devastating. Pakistan is almost in a state of civil war. Not that it was peaceful before, but now cars are being stoned, shops burned. Curfews will soon be imposed, I am guessing, if they have not already.
On a personal note: my cousin who lives in Pakistan, decided to leave work early on Thursday when he heard the news of the assassination. He left in his car with three of his coworkers for safety measures. While they were driving, their car started getting stoned. They were unable to continue driving, so they left the car behind and fled on foot, into a smaller street, looking for cover. luckily, a stranger let them in her house, and they are still residing there. His own house is only 2km away, but because of the savageness going on, he can't go home.
